Government Consent Granted for Newport Wafer Fab Acquisition by Vishay

05/03/2024

Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State in the Cabinet Office, Oliver Dowden, has finally given the green light for the acquisition of Newport Wafer Fab by Vishay. The long-awaited approval comes after months of uncertainty and deliberation by the government.

Vishay's substantial $177 million offer for the fab was accepted last November. However, the process was prolonged due to the government's cautious approach towards granting the final consent order. The delay had raised concerns among stakeholders and industry observers, but the decision has now been made.

The Newport Wafer Fab, previously owned by Inmos and established in 1980, has been the subject of intense scrutiny due to its strategic importance in the semiconductor industry. The acquisition by Vishay marks a significant development in the sector. Prior to Vishay's bid, the fab was acquired by Nexperia, a company controlled by a Chinese government-controlled fund named Wingtech. This ownership structure raised security concerns, prompting the government to carefully evaluate the implications of the acquisition.

The government's approval of the acquisition by Vishay underscores its commitment to national security and the protection of critical technologies. The decision signifies a balanced approach to foreign investments in sectors of strategic importance, ensuring that the UK's economic interests align with its security objectives.

The acquisition of Newport Wafer Fab by Vishay heralds a new chapter for the fab and its role in the semiconductor industry. It represents a key milestone in the evolution of the UK's technology landscape and sets the stage for future collaborations and advancements in the sector.
