Introducing Arduino Uno R4: Evolution with 32-bit Power

28/06/2023

Arduino, a leading provider of single board computers, is set to release new versions of its popular Uno board. The Uno R4 series introduces significant advancements by incorporating a 32-bit microcontroller from Renesas. This latest iteration maintains the standard form factor, shield compatibility, and 5V power supply of the well-established Uno R3.

The Uno R4 series offers two variants: the Uno R4 Minima and the Uno R4 WiFi, powered by Espressif. Both versions feature an upgraded microcontroller with up to 16 times the clock speed, memory, and flash storage compared to their predecessors. The RA4M1 processor, based on an Arm Cortex-M4 core, drives the enhanced performance of the Uno R4. With a clock speed of 48MHz, it brings improved processing capabilities to the table.

The Uno R4 boasts 32KB of SRAM and 256KB of flash memory, enabling users to execute more complex and resource-intensive programs. Additionally, it incorporates a Floating Point Unit (FPU), enhancing mathematical calculations and expanding the range of applications that can be implemented on the board. These features make the Uno R4 an ideal choice for demanding projects that require increased processing power.

The higher-end variant, the Uno R4 WiFi, offers additional functionality with the inclusion of an Espressif ESP32-S3 module. This module enables seamless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE connectivity, empowering users to connect their projects to various IoT platforms, including the Arduino Cloud. Furthermore, the Uno R4 WiFi incorporates a 12×8 red LED matrix, allowing for basic animations or the visualization of sensor data.

For makers seeking improved performance at a more affordable price point, the Uno R4 Minima presents a compelling option. While it lacks the Wi-Fi module and LED matrix found in the Uno R4 WiFi, it still delivers the enhanced processing power and expanded memory capacity of the series.

With the launch of the Uno R4 series, Arduino continues to evolve its single board computer offerings. By integrating a 32-bit microcontroller and introducing new features, Arduino caters to the growing demands of the maker community for more powerful and versatile development boards. Whether users require advanced connectivity options or increased performance, the Uno R4 series provides flexible solutions for a wide range of projects.
